Life

Hantaï initially studied art in Budapest , but settled in Paris in 1949 . There he shared a room with Christian d'Orgeix , who introduced him to the Parisian art world. Hantaï was initially drawn to surrealism and was accepted into the surrealist circle by André Breton in 1952 . In 1955, however, he broke with the group after violent arguments about the expulsion of Max Ernst . Under the influence of Jackson Pollock , Hantaï turned to abstraction, at the same time he became increasingly committed to Catholicism . Together with Georges Mathieu and Pierre Soulages , Hantaï became one of the “conservative revolutionaries” of French art of the 1960s. However, due to their generally bright colors, his works appear more optimistic or at least more weightless than those of his colleagues.

Simon Hantaï was a participant in documenta II (1959) in Kassel .

Hantaï is the father of the musicians Pierre Hantaï , (* 1964) Marc Hantaï and Jérôme Hantaï (* 1961), all of whom work in the field of historical performance practice .
