Simon Leopold Baer
Simon Leopold Baer (born November 17, 1845 in Frankfurt am Main ; † February 21, 1919 there ) was a German antiquarian and bookseller.
Life
He was the son of Leopold Joseph Baer (1805–1861) and grandson of Joseph Baer (1767–1851), the founder of what was later to become an antiquarian bookshop Joseph Baer & Co. He joined the family antiquarian bookshop in Frankfurt in 1861 after the philanthropist's visit . From 1870 he managed this together with his brother Julius (Leopold Joseph) (1842–1873) and his uncle Hermann Joseph , since 1873 with Saly Baer (1855–1882), son of his uncle Hermann, from 1882 alone. In 1889 he was the first of the great German antiquarians to travel to North America. The second-hand bookshop was one of the largest in Europe with a stock of around 500,000 volumes when it moved to a specially built house at Hochstrasse 6 in 1899 . The bookshop was also connected to a scientific publishing house.
In 1901, long-time employee Moriz Sondheim (1860–1944) became a partner in the antiquarian bookshop. The sons of Simon Leopold Baer Leo (pold Alfred) (1880–1948) and Edwin Baer (1881–1965) continued the antiquarian bookshop with Moriz Sondheim, from 1905 as authorized signatory, from 1911 as partner. On January 1, 1916, Simon Leopold left the company.
He was married since 1877 to the American Lizzie, b. Lehmaier (1857-1896).
