Simon Pistoris the Elder (* around 1453 in Leipzig ; † February 4, 1523 ibid) was a German doctor and university professor .

Life

Simon Pistoris came from the Pistoris family and was the son of Nicolaus Pistoris , medical professor, electoral personal physician and mayor of Leipzig . After finishing school he himself studied philosophy and medicine in Leipzig. In 1473 he graduated with a master's degree in philosophy and in 1487 received his doctorate in medicine. In 1489 he took over the position of dean of the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig . From 1494 he was elected part-time as councilor and city syndic in the city parliament of Leipzig. From 1501 to 1508 he was appointed personal physician to Elector Joachim I Nestor of Brandenburg .

In 1506 he played a major role in the founding of the University of Frankfurt an der Oder , but remained in Leipzig himself. In 1508 he became full professor of pathology and later also professor of therapy. He was a vehement supporter of Arab medicine and was considered a skilled doctor and a highly valued teacher.

Simon Pistoris was married three times and had four children with his second wife Margarete Martha Becker von Schmiedburg, including the later legal scholar Simon Pistoris the Younger and Anna, who later became Marcus Schütz (1483–1539) and then Hieronymus Rauscher, d. J. (1517–1576), both also mayors of Leipzig, married.
