Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie
Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie KT GCVO GBE MC (* 17th October 1914 ; † 15. July 1999 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party .
Life
Simon Ramsey, second son of Arthur Ramsay, 14th Earl of Dalhousie and Mary Adelaide Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, completed his education at Eton College and Christ Church College . During the Second World War he did his military service with Royal Highland Regiment "The Black Watch" and received the Military Cross for his military services .
He was first elected to the House of Commons as a candidate of the Conservative Party in 1945 and represented the interests of the Forfarshire constituency in this until 1950 . He was from 1946 to 1948 "cheerleader" ( Whip ) the conservative lower house faction .
After the death of his older brother John Ramsay, 15th Earl of Dalhousie , he inherited his title in 1950. This also made him a member of the House of Lords .
Between 1957 and 1963 he was Governor General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland . The federation officially fell apart on December 31, 1963, when Northern Rhodesia gained independence from Great Britain as Zambia and Nyasaland as Malawi . The remaining area of Southern Rhodesia , which today forms Zimbabwe , was then called Rhodesia .
After his return to Great Britain he took on some honorary posts and was Lord Chamberlain of the Household of the "Queen Mum" Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon between 1965 and 1992 . In addition, he was from 1967 until his replacement by David Ogilvy, 8th Earl of Airlie , in 1989 Lord Lieutenant of Angus and thus the official representative of Queen Elizabeth II in a part of Scotland .
He was also Chancellor of the University of Dundee between 1977 and 1992 .
Ramsay was a lieutenant in the Royal Company of Archers and was inducted into the Thistle Order in 1971. His titles passed to his eldest son James on his death .
