Simonis et Judae , also Curia Simonis et Judae , is the name of a listed building in the city of Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt . The cathedral café is located in the building .

location

It is located on the west side of Domstrasse in downtown Merseburg at Domstrasse 8 , north of the junction with Schulstrasse . Simonis et Judae lies in front of the Crooked Gate in the so-called outer cathedral freedom.

Architecture and history

The building is part of the cathedral curia of the Merseburg Cathedral and, according to an inscription on the house, was built in 1557 on the site of a small, dilapidated previous building. Philipp Arbogast is named as the canon responsible for construction. In the first quarter of the 18th century, the Renaissance building was extended significantly to the south in the Baroque style, with the length of the house almost doubling. Canons lived in the house. The name of the building came from the altars from which the respective canons obtained their income, here Simon and Judas.

Particularly noteworthy is a seat niche portal and a profiled portal wall. There are several Renaissance windows facing the courtyard. The north gable of the building is provided with blind niches . The building is covered by a gable roof .

Inside the elongated house there is an arched room on the first floor of the northern part. The upper floor is spanned by a beamed ceiling from the 16th century. In addition, there are lavishly decorated stucco ceilings from the expansion period in the southern part. In another room there are still the remains of a classical grind from the second quarter of the 19th century . There are two large cellar vaults from the 16th century.

After the First World War , the cathedral chapter sold the building during the inflationary period. Later, during the time of the GDR, a hairdressing cooperative was located in the house. After 1990 the roof structure was renovated and the roof was newly covered. The renovation had become necessary due to dry rot infestation. The building then stood empty for several years, which caused damage to the building again. The property was then acquired by Meinolf Shoulderbraucks and restored from 2003 to 2009 with the use of municipal funds.

Today (as of 2017) the building houses four apartments, a dental practice and the canon café with the VERITAS wine office.

In the local register of monuments , the curia is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20151 .
