Sinking of Japan ( Japanese 日本 沈没 Nippon Chinbotsu ) is a Japanese disaster film from 2006. It was directed by Shinji Higuchi and is the second adaptation of Sakyō Komatsu's novel Japan Sinks after The Fall of Japan from 1973 .

action

The Japanese islands are hit by several major earthquakes . The geophysicist Dr. Yusuke Tadokoro is investigating the matter and is horrified to discover in his investigations that the earthquakes are only the harbingers of a much larger catastrophe, because shifting the continental plates would completely sink Japan into the sea within a few years. The government is initially not taking the researcher's warnings seriously. Only when large parts of Japan were destroyed by devastating earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis did the government recognize the gravity of the situation. Plans are being drawn up immediately to evacuate the Japanese population and relocate them to other countries. While the country's evacuation has been slow, Dr. Tadokoro comes up with a plan to save Japan from ruin. He wants to attach several nuclear explosives to the moving continental plates in order to detach them from the Pacific plate by detonating them. The risky plan actually succeeds and Japan is saved at the last moment.

publication

The film was released in Japanese theaters on July 15, 2006 and grossed 5.34 billion yen.

Splendid released the film on March 30, 2007 in Germany on DVD.

reception

The lexicon of international films wrote: “ Remake of the disaster film Der Untergang Japans (1973), which relies on bombastic computer effects and fast cuts, but loses sight of the people and the emotional content of the story. "

The TV magazine TV Spielfilm judged: “ The poor script sinks the show values. "
