Sirajganj ( Bengali সিরাজগঞ্জ) is a city in Bangladesh that is part of the Rajshahi Division . The city forms the capital of the Sirajganj district of the same name and is located on the Jamuna and west of the Brahmaputra , about 110 km northwest of Dhaka . The city is part of the Upazila Sirajganj Sadar with 555,155 inhabitants. The population of Sirajganj in 2011 was over 158,000.

The processing and trading of jute is of economic importance .

history

During the British rule, Sirajganj was a city in the Pabna district in the province of East Bengal and Assam. The location on the right bank of the Jamuna River or on the main stream of the Brahmaputra was a six-hour steamship ride from Goalundo train station. It was the main market place for jute in North Bengal with several jute presses. Many jute processing plants were closed after the Assam earthquake in 1897. The population of British India was 23,114 according to the 1901 census.

Infrastructure

The Bangabandhu Bridge , which spans the Jamuna, is located here. This bridge connects it to Dhaka, the capital, and the eastern part of the country by road and rail. Sirajganj is also a river port. In addition, the city has a well-developed connection with northern and southern Bangladesh.
