occupation

Sisi ... and I'll tell you the truth is an Austrian docudrama about the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary .

action

The personal physician of the imperial family, Dr. Hermann von Widerhofer learns of the murder of Empress Elisabeth on September 11, 1898 in Geneva. In flashbacks he tells of Elisabeth's life, from her engagement to Emperor Franz Joseph I to her death. The focus is on Elisabeth's health and psychological state as well as private details that were unknown during her lifetime: her obsession with beauty, eating disorders, her increasing melancholy, her superstition, etc.

production

The film uses excerpts from the well-known Sissi trilogy from 1955–57 and the silent film about Sisi made in 1920 and combines them with new scenes. This was partly filmed from December 2008 to February 2009 on original locations, for example in Schönbrunn Palace , Eckartsau Palace or on Madeira .

The film was produced by M-Cine Productions and Power of Earth TV & Film Productions . It was shot in 3D , with the old recordings also being converted into 3D, and was released in cinemas by Constantin Film on October 12, 2012, the year of the 175th birthday of Empress Elisabeth. Since then it has been shown several times on TV on ORF III .

reception

The film was funded by FISA Filmstandort Austria with 112,500 euros. It ran in theaters for eleven weeks and grossed $ 96,213.

The reviews criticized, among other things, that the film does not keep the promise to bring really new truths about Elisabeth's life to light. In addition, the classification of Elisabeth's life in the historical context is missing, which reduces her to the figure of the "lonely empress" in a golden cage:

“[D] that she led this isolated life at the expense of others, especially her husband, that she was never ready to 'work' for her luxury life and to do her duty as empress, that she neglected husband and children, will also swept under the table like their enthusiastic relationship with Hungary, which ultimately had some political consequences. [...] In the end, one can only wish Elisabeth one thing: That one does not constantly thirst for new 'truths' about her, but that one finally closes her files. They have been instrumentalized for everything imaginable - now they could be left alone. "

“'The film doesn't leave out any personal details,' says the advertising text, and this is undoubtedly true when you drive the camera into the monarch's vomit bowl or the spaces between the teeth during the inspection. In addition to all the activities shown in detail, the person remains a mere shell, although the documentation focuses almost exclusively on the main character and leaves out the other family members or political events entirely. “In 'Sisi ... and I tell you the truth', several actresses embody the Empress in the most varied of phases of life. Jessica Franz and Anna Berg impress with their expressiveness and overshadow the charming grace that Romy Schneider gave their role with their haunting style of play . "
