Hermann von Widerhofer (born March 24, 1832 in Weyer an der Enns; † July 28, 1901 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian pediatrician and the first full professor of paediatrics in German-speaking countries.

Life

Hermann von Widerhofer studied medicine, was a secondary doctor in the foundling asylum from 1856 to 1869 and joined the St. Anna Children's Hospital in 1859 as an assistant to the clinic director Franz Mayr . In 1862 he completed his habilitation in paediatrics and in 1863 - after Mayr's death - was appointed director of the hospital. In 1865 he was appointed associate professor and in 1885 full professor and director of the Clinic for Childhood Diseases. Widerhofer, together with two other doctors, carried out the autopsy of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary on January 31, 1889 in the Vienna Hofburg .

In 1889 he was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 1st class, and in 1890 he was promoted to the baron status. Hermann von Widerhofer died on July 28, 1901 in Bad Ischl. He is buried in the Hietzingen cemetery . An alley and a square were dedicated to him in the ninth district of Vienna.

A monument designed by the sculptor Richard Kauffungen (1854–1942) was erected for Hermann von Widerhofer in 1906/1907 in the arcade courtyard of the main building of the University of Vienna .

He was the personal physician of the children of the Austrian imperial family and thus contributed to the fact that paediatrics quickly gained university recognition and the Viennese pediatric school achieved a leading position in the German-speaking area.

He made special contributions to the treatment of diphtheria . His treatise on diseases of the stomach and intestines became the basis for the further development of this teaching.
