Abderrahmane Sissako
Abderrahmane Sissako (born October 13, 1961 in Kiffa , Mauritania ) is a Mauritanian film director and producer. He is considered one of the most famous filmmakers from sub-Saharan Africa . Globalization and exile are important themes in his films .
Life
Shortly after his birth in Mauritania, Sissako moved with his family to Mali , his father's country of origin. In 1980 he briefly returned to Mauritania before studying cinematography at the Gerasimov Institute in Moscow from 1983 to 1989 . He settled in France in the early 1990s.
In 2003 he was a member of the international jury of the Berlinale . At the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 he was a member of the short film jury, in 2003 he was president of the jury of the Un Certain Regard section , in 2007 a member of the main jury and in 2015 president of the short film jury.
