Sisu RA-140 DS or Raisu is a mine clearance vehicle introduced in 1994 by the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Sisu-Auto and later Patria Vehicles . A total of 41 units were produced up to 2001.

planning

Planning for a new demining vehicle began in 1986 and the first prototype was built in 1990. The basic structure was based on the SA-110 prototype, but adapted according to its purpose. Pasi technology was used in the development of the armored cabin.

Usually Sisu military vehicles have a nickname in addition to the official model name. The vehicle almost got a childish nickname Misu , which means something like "kitten" or "kitty". It was derived from Miina-Sisu ("Mine-Sisu") and has already been printed in some documents. The technical department quickly changed the name to Raisu , from Raivaus-Sisu (" Räumung -Sisu"), which means something like "stormy".

production

The RA-140 DS was produced in Hämeenlinna, and was the last Sisu vehicle to be developed there.

Four vehicles were produced for the Danish Army between 1996 and 1997, the other vehicles were handed over to various brigades of the Finnish Army .

Operation and characteristics

The RA-140 DS is used to destroy minefields that are buried both on the surface and conventionally. Anti-tank mines weighing up to 10 kg can be blown up. In this way, a lane can be cleared for a vehicle convoy. The Raisu was not designed for combat use.

The demining kit contains 82 hammers that are attached to a rotating drum with chains. During operation, the vehicle is used in reverse to ensure the best protection for the crew. A protective shield next to the roller protects the crew against mine splinters. The vehicle clears a 3.4 meter wide path and the clearance depth can be controlled manually or automatically. The maximum speed in the clearing operation is 6 km / h and can eliminate mines up to 10 kg of explosives. The clearing roller is rotated lengthways and stored on the loading bed of the vehicle during transport.

The maximum gradient is 60% and the side gradient is 30%. The vehicle can negotiate uneven floors of a maximum of 0.5 meters and the penetration depth is 0.6 meters. The maximum fording depth is 0.8 meters. Raisu's cross-country mobility is good and it can be quickly driven to a new location. This is a major advantage compared to conventional, heavier mine clearance vehicles .

Technical specifications

The vehicle is powered by an air-cooled six-cylinder Deutz BF 6L 913 C turbodiesel engine. The transmission is a four-speed automatic transmission from Renk of the type Doromat 874 AM / PTO. The portal front axle is sprung with coil springs and both axles are driven and equipped with a lockable differential. The front axle is equipped with disc brakes, the rear axle with drum brakes.

In operation, the vehicle is driven by hydraulic power transmission, which also drives the roller. The lifting or lowering of the armored steel deflector shield between the roller and the vehicle is also done hydraulically. The roller speed can be continuously adjusted between 0 and 500 min −1 . The armored cabin contains seats for the driver and the commander and is equipped with NBC protection . It is designed for explosions of up to 10 kg under the vehicle. The armor protects against bullets up to caliber 7.62. A 2061 VHF radio is available for communication. The wheels are mine and bulletproof. There is an option to mount a 12.7 caliber machine gun. A winch is fitted as standard.

Operating history

The four vehicles from the Danish Armed Forces were used in the former Yugoslavia . The vehicles had serious problems in use and thus for the Danish armed forces, which then carried out their other mine clearing vehicle orders with their Hydrema 910 MCV.

Finland has used the Raisus in UN missions .
