Sisyphus painter
The Sisyphus Painter was an Apulian vase painter . His works are in the last two decades of the 5th century BC. And the beginning of the 4th century BC.
The Sisyphus painter, who can only be named with an emergency name because the real name is unknown, is one of the most influential painters of Apulian vase painting and thus of all of Lower Italian vase painting . He got his emergency name from the inscription on a heart-shaped gift that a youth is holding on one of his volute craters in a wedding presentation. He stands in the tradition of the painter of the dancing girl in Berlin , as whose workshop associate he is regarded later. Arthur D. Trendall describes the Sisyphus painter as "probably the most outstanding artist of the Tarentine school at all". The quality of his work, however, fluctuates. Above all on larger vases, he shows himself to be a master of head representations, which he often shows in three-quarter view.
In the early work there are various bell craters , most of which are painted with three figures. The Sisyphus painter mainly shows everyday scenes or pictures from the Dionysian realm . On the back he always shows two or three cloak boys . In his later creative period, the quality of the work declined, and many of the portrayals only appear stereotypical. The faces are rounder and look coarser. The subjects of the pictures are also becoming less unimaginative, with young men, warriors and women almost always on display.
It is assumed that the Sisyphus Painter is related to the Attic vase painters, dwarf and Kodros painters . There are also parallels to the work of Polion . The Sisyphus painter stands at the beginning of the two later mainstreams of Apulian vase painting, on the one hand the style in which rather smaller vessels are painted with simple combinations of figures ( simple style ), and on the other hand those depicting grave cult scenes on large vases ( rich style ) become. Several other important artists belong to the circle of the painter, including the Hearst painter . The Tarporley painter is his pupil and successor in his workshop.
