Sisyphus (Berlin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sisyphos is a techno club in Berlin-Rummelsburg .

It is operated in a former factory for dog biscuits and, according to the Resident Advisor magazine, is one of the ten most important clubs in Berlin in the field of electronic dance music (as of March 2017).

history

In 2008 the summer lights eV , an association for contemporary media and free art, took over the former dog biscuit factory in Berlin-Rummelsburg. First, a center for creative workshops was to be developed on the site. In 2009 there were the first parties, which originally only took place in a relatively small circle. Little by little, today's event site, which is partially designed as an open-air club, was created. Similar to Bar 25 , there is a spacious outdoor area. At the end of 2009 an entrepreneurial company (limited liability) , the Sisyphos Event UG , was founded, which was converted into a GmbH in 2012 . After the club enjoyed increasing popularity, it was unexpectedly closed in 2014 by the Lichtenberg district office due to security deficiencies. Accordingly, the club did not have a valid operating license and the evacuation concept was unclear. After a break of a few months, it reopened at the end of 2014. Nowadays the club usually opens on Friday evenings around midnight and is open continuously until at least Monday morning. Especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings, the waiting time at the entrance can be several hours. The club is closed on certain dates, such as the Fusion Festival , and on certain occasions, such as the New Year's Eve party, but is occasionally open for a whole week.

The club took part in the “ United We Stream ” campaign of the Berlin club scene, which suffered massive losses due to the measures taken against COVID-19 . In addition, the outside area of the club was converted into a restaurant, the "Sisyphos Entaurant".

Companies

Today's operator of the club is Sisyphos Event GmbH . The founding managing directors are Julius Hausl and Lina Thiele. As of December 31, 2013, the GmbH had fixed assets of 432,846 euros and current assets of 348,693 euros and achieved an annual surplus of 167,493 euros.

reception

The club has been mentioned repeatedly in national and international reporting for years. The online magazine BuzzFeed praised it as "out of this world" in the English edition. In particular, when the club was temporarily closed in 2014, several daily newspapers devoted their own articles to Sisyphus . In this context, the Berliner Abendblatt spoke of "Europe-wide cult status". The magazine Prinz describes the Sisyphos next to the Berghain as the best club in Berlin “for hip electro fans”. Die Zeit describes the club as "smaller, dirtier, more intimate" than Berghain .
