Sitiados was a pop-rock - band from Portugal , the strong influences from folk and occasionally Fado had.

history

The former members of the band Meteoros , José Resende (guitar), João Aguardela (vocals) and Mário Miranda (bass), together with Fernando Fonseca (drums) founded the group in Lisbon as a new wave band. The name means roughly Die Besiegerten in German and is borrowed from an early piece by the band Mão Morta . The Waterboys were an important influence, and so traditional Portuguese folk music was an element in their music that initially only showed up occasionally. But they already stood out from the many emerging independent bands and got their first attention, especially at their concerts at Rock Rendez-Vous (RRV). In his fifth band competition in 1988 they finished second and were represented on the RRV annual sampler Registos 1989 with the piece A Noite (German: Die Nacht). As a result, they became better known and occurred more frequently.

Accordion player Sandra Baptista and mandolin player Jorge Buco had now joined the band, and João Marques came on bass for Miranda. Her music was now moving away from the New Wave. In 1992 they signed a contract with BMG Ariola and released their debut album. Their mixture of rock and folklore was characterized by cheerfulness and rough charm and was now able to win many friends with the general public, in particular through the popular piece Vida de Marinheiro (German: seamen's life). The album quickly reached gold status and sold over 40,000 copies in total. The successful supergroup project Resistência brought a version of A Noite on their second album Mano a Mano in 1992 , which was previously only heard on the RRV sampler and was considered a cult piece by the Sitiados. This increased their awareness as well as their appearance at the Festa do Avante! in the same year.

Ani Fonseca (acoustic guitar) and Jorge Quadros (drums) joined the band in 1993, and a brass section was incorporated, with Jorge Ribeiro (trombone), João Cabrita (saxophone) and João Marques (trumpet). The band released their second album, with guest musicians like Entre Aspas singer Viviane , Paulo Bragança , and the singer of the punk band Censurados , João Ribas . They were represented on the live compilation of Johnny Guitar , the concert club of Xutos & Pontapés guitarist Zé Pedro, with an idiosyncratic version of the polemical Mata Ratos hit A Minha Sogra é about Boi , which they called A Marcha dos Electrodomésticos (Eng. about: The Parade of Household Appliances). The version caused quite a stir in the music scene and was the inspiration for the title of their third album, O Triúnfo dos Electrodomésticos (German: The triumph of household appliances). The album contained a version of Sérgio Godinho's piece Lá isso é , but failed to attract the renewed attention of the large audience and sold very poorly, also due to a lack of promotional activities by the record company.

This was preceded by participation in tribute compilations for António Variações and José Afonso in 1994 , and the Young Talent Prize of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores for the singer João Aguardela. They had also performed abroad, especially in France, where they were among others. a. played at the Zénith (Paris) and at the Printemps de Bourges Festival . After the bad sales of the third album in 1995 and decreasing band activities, they released a fourth album in 1996, which, like their debut, carried the band name and surprised with new electronic elements, but was again without any great success, also due to a lack of outstanding singlesong. Singer Aguardela now devoted himself increasingly to other projects. In 1997 the first of four albums of his electro-folk project Megafone was released .

In 1999 the Sitiados took part in the tribute project for the 20th anniversary of the Xutos & Pontapés, switched to Sony , and recorded the album Mata-me Depois (German: kill me later) with a new drummer (Samuel Palitos, ex-Censurados ) on. It surprised with greatly reduced folk influences, simple and elegant pop songs, and a more subtle appearance of the band. The album gained more attention, for example through the single Será que ela vem , and through again ironic-humorous, often critical lyrics without repeating the band's initial successes. In 2000 the band stopped all activities. The surprising death of the singer Aguardela in 2009 put an end to any speculation about the band's return.

In 2011 the biography of Sitiados singer João Aguardela was published.
