The Sittaung (formerly Sittang or Sittoung ) is a river in south- central Myanmar in the Bago Division . The Pegu-Joma Mountains separate its catchment area from that of the Irrawaddy . The river rises on the edge of the Shan Plateau southeast of Mandalay and then flows south to the Gulf of Martaban . Its length is 420 km, its average annual runoff is 50 cubic kilometers.

Although it flows through relatively flat terrain, the Sittaung has a considerable tidal range at its mouth, which makes it usable only for small watercraft. The river is navigable for 40 km all year round, and even 90 km for three months. The river is primarily used for logging. Strong currents make the river in eastern Myanmar meaningless as a transport route. Due to the lack of sediments from the Himalayas , the catchment area of the Sittaung does not have the same agricultural utility as that of the Irrawaddy.
