Ernst Nils Sivar Erik Arnér (born March 13, 1909 in Arby , Kalmar Lan ; † January 13, 1997 ) was a Swedish writer , radio play writer and playwright .

Life

Arnér grew up in Småland as the son of a merchant. He studied literary history, Nordic languages and history at the University of Lund , was a master’s degree at the age of 32 and then a teacher in Karlskrona , in Skara and from 1944 to 1947 in Norrköping . In 1959 he married the artist and author Lenke Rothman .

In 1943 he made his debut with his novel Plånbok borttappad ( Lost Wallet ), which deals with questions of power and law in connection with the Finnish Winter War . “In his first works Arnér tries to interpret human loneliness and ambivalence in a mystical way.” He wrote several dramas and in the late 1950s numerous radio plays as well as the text for Sven-David Sandström's first opera (1973) På Finsta sommaren år 1316 (Birgittamusik Number 1).

The background of his most important book of the Stockholm novel Tvärbalk ( crossbeams , 1963) is the problem of the welfare state. The work was translated into German and filmed in 1967 under the direction of Jörn Donner . Using the example of its main character, a Jew who emigrated to Sweden, the film shows the refugees' alienation after years of deprivation in the concentration camp and the apolitical attitude and egoism of the residents of the capital. The film had little success.

In most of his novels, the contrasts between men and women play a major role. In society, very contradicting types of people are often combined, whose marriages without illusions he described and analyzed. "The analytical-psychological outweighs the lyrical in Arnér's tightly composed novels." His style combines expressive realism with symbolism, he is "light, quick, effective and reproduces dialogues with virtuosity."
