designation

Church on the outskirts of Sivas

During the Turkish period the place was called Cevahir ( Turkish: Cevahir = diamond , Greek form: Τζοβαέρη). Later the name Siva caught on. There has been much speculation about the origin of this name, the name is said to derive from the Egyptian oasis Siwa , where the famous oracle of Ammon was located, or from Silva, the Latin word for forest. Even the Indian god Shiva is mentioned as the namesake. The most likely explanation derives the word from Arabic from the word Siva, which means source.

More recently, the originally female place name has been changed to the male Sivas to avoid confusion with the place of the same name Siva , which is also in the Heraklion regional district.
