Louis Berdez

Louis Berdez (born December 29, 1839 in Vevey , † March 11, 1905 in Menton ) was a Swiss theologian , lawyer and politician .

biography

Louis Berdez studied at the Universities of Basel , Heidelberg and Lausanne Theology . In Heidelberg he became a member of the Corps Helvetia in 1859 . He completed his theology studies in 1863 with a licentiate . He then began to study law in Lausanne, which he continued to study in Heidelberg and later in Paris . In 1866 he also obtained a licentiate in rights. After graduating, he settled in the canton of Vaud , where he was admitted to the bar in 1868. In 1898 he was chairman of the bar association.

Berdez was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud from 1870 to 1885 and from 1889 to 1897 as a liberal member of parliament. His interpellation in the Cantonal Parliament of Vaud in 1892 led to the radical government being replaced by a liberal one. Berdez advocated strengthening popular rights at the cantonal level. From 1884 to 1885 he was Vice President of the Constitutional Council of the new constitution of 1885.

Berdez was a member of the Swiss National Council from 1873 to 1877. He turned against the constitutional reform of 1872 and the Gotthard Compromise. In the election to the Swiss Federal Council of 1881, he narrowly failed.

Berdez is one of the outstanding representatives of liberalism in the canton of Vaud.
