Sixtus Armin Thon (born November 10, 1817 in Eisenach , Thuringia , † September 26, 1901 in Weimar , Thuringia) was a German painter , etcher and lithographer .

Life

Born in Eisenach, Sixtus Armin Thon, son of the mineralogist , natural scientist and copper engraver Theodor Thon (1792–1838) began studying painting at the Art Academy in Leipzig in 1837 , which he then studied with Friedrich Preller the Elder at the Princely Free Drawing School in Weimar continued with which he undertook study trips to the Thuringian Forest , Norway and the Netherlands .

In the 1850s, Thon also ran a photography studio; Along with Adelbert Schenk, he was one of the pioneers of early photography in Weimar.

After Thon had completed his training in Antwerp , he was employed as a teacher at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar from 1861 , and he later also taught at the Sophienstift there . Sixtus Armin Thon emerged particularly as a genre and landscape painter , but also made a name for himself as an etcher and lithographer. He died in Weimar in 1901 just before the age of 84.

There are pictures of him. a. in the municipal collections of Braunschweig .
