history

Skilsaw hand-held circular saw with the original right angle of two shafts in November 2005 with the United States Navy in Djibouti

In October 1922, Edmond Michel applied to the United States Patent Office for a patent for his invention of an electric circular saw with the innovation of height-adjustable runners for the Electric Hand Saw Company in New Orleans , which became official in October 1924.

The Skilsaw hand-held circular saw trademark, which originated in the 1920s, is primarily known in North America and first appeared in the Official Gazette , which is the weekly journal of the United States Patent and Trademark Office . It includes a larger range of hand-held circular saws than Skil in the same group.

In the 1950s the company expanded beyond the borders of the USA and changed the company name to the "Skil Corporation". International sales started in Canada , followed a few years later in Europe. The product range has grown strongly since the market launch and was constantly expanded to include new products for the tool sector.

In 1961 the first European Skil factory was built in Breda , the Netherlands . The construction of the electric motor factory in Eindhoven in the Netherlands followed a little later.

From 1970, Skil began building a network of factories, service centers and sales offices around the world.

In 1979 the company was bought by Emerson Electric .

In 1996 Skil was taken over by Robert Bosch GmbH.

On August 26, 2016, the takeover by Chervon (HK) Ltd. , based in Nanjing , China .

brand

The Skil brand in Europe is divided into three sub-brands, each of which addresses different target groups.

A placement of Skil power tools in the hardware store

Skil

The Skil brand is primarily aimed at do-it-yourselfers who are less experienced in using power tools. In order to meet the requirements of this target group, many devices are characterized by product features that explain to the user how the respective tool works. This includes, for example, the contact pressure control ("Pressure Control") developed and patented by Skil for grinding devices, which uses a color-coded LED scale to indicate to the user whether he is exerting too much or too little pressure on the workpiece. Further product features of this type are, for example, the automatic belt centering for belt grinders or the direction of rotation display for cordless drills.

In addition to the special product features, Skil would also like to guarantee high quality and an attractive price-performance ratio for its power tools. Both criteria have been confirmed in numerous independent tests (as of 2011 there were over 90 product tests across Europe in which Skil power tools were test winners or received the highest rating). In addition, Skil meets the quality guidelines of ISO 9001.

The Skil brand is sold in all sales channels relevant for power tools (hardware stores, specialist shops for power tools, Internet).

Jigsaw from the Skil Masters brand

Skil Masters

The Skil Masters brand has been specially developed for commercial use and is therefore aimed at professional users of power tools. A long service life is accordingly one of the main criteria. Components such as helical gears , dust-protected ball bearings or switch-off carbon brushes should meet this requirement. Due to the target group, the Skil Masters brand differs from the DIY brand in addition to its higher product quality and its product range. E.g. are available from Skil Masters 2-speed agitators, belt sanders with 100 mm belt width and circular saws with 85 mm cutting depth. Devices of this performance class are mainly used in the commercial sector.

The Skil Masters brand is sold exclusively through specialist power tool retailers.

Skil Urban Series

The Skil Urban Series brand consists of a range of garden tools specially developed for urban gardens. The product line is characterized in particular by the cross-brand equipment feature "Easy Storage", which should allow particularly space-saving storage of the devices.

The Skil Urban Series brand is sold in all sales channels relevant for power tools (hardware stores, specialist shops for power tools, Internet).

Sponsorship

In addition to the bicycle component manufacturer Shimano, Skil was the main sponsor of the Skil-Shimano team . In 2009 the Skil-Shimano team took part in the Tour de France for the first time. On September 28, 2011, Iwan Spekenbrink , manager of the team operating company SMS Cycling BV , announced that Skil will end his involvement with the team at the end of 2011 and that the team will start under a new name in 2012. The sponsorship of the women's team Skil 1T4i will continue until the end of the 2012 season.
