Skorpa is a small island in the municipality Kristiansund in the Norwegian Fylke (Province) More og Romsdal . It is located directly east-northeast of Kristiansund in the European Arctic Ocean and is around 0.7 km 2 in size, around 1.5 km in length and up to 450 m in width . Only 0.06 km 2 at its southwest end are built on.

Location and traffic

From the town of Kristiansund on the main island, it is only by the small, about 60 ha large island Meløya and two approximately 15 m wide Sunde separately traversed during the Skorpaveien (Skorpastraße) of bridges.

landscape

Skorpa has a largely natural landscape with a few small hills and small forest areas, is swampy in large parts and is home to a rich fauna. In a small bay on the north bank there is a natural rock pool into which sea water is washed at high tide ; this is a popular bathing place in summer, as the pent-up water warms up to pleasant temperatures in the sun. A number of skerries and rocks lie in front of the Atlantic almost along the entire north-west coast .

In 2008, however, intensive planning began with regard to residential development in the landside coastal zone along the Nordsund. Although this initially met with widespread rejection from the population, who wanted the island to be preserved as a leisure and recreation area, after a long process the green light was given in 2012 to build a total of 370 new apartments in six separate settlements on the island.

economy

In earlier times, three areas of the island were used for agriculture , but the last farm was abandoned in the late 1980s. There used to be a mink farm on the island. On the Visnenskai (Visnensbrygga) there was a large clipfish drying facility until it was destroyed by a fire in 1997 , which has since been converted into private apartments.

archeology

Excavations are currently taking place on the island for the remains of human presence during the Mesolithic .
