Sky (dt. Sky ) is a song by British singer Sonique . The song was recorded in 1999 and released in September 2000. Sky was the second single on the Hear My Cry album . After the international success of the debut single It Feels so Good , expectations for the second release were high. Despite chart success, Sky could not meet these expectations.

style

Sky is primarily assigned to trance , but also contains elements of pop music . Especially through the voice of DJane Sonique, who is described as smoky and outstanding, the song is given a special independence in the techno -influenced music of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The music would correspond, through the influence of the producer Rick Nowels, and especially the mix team Thunderpuss , the dance music of the time. Nowels was, among other things, participations almost at the same time as the release of Sky with the piece I Turn to You sung by Melanie C in the charts. The mix team Thunderpuss, however, worked with Madonna , Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera .

Published variants

The song was released on CD, as a vinyl single and as a download, as well as on the studio album Hear My Cry . When the single was released, four different versions were already being marketed, on the one hand as a radio edit and on the other as remixes by Sonique, Conductor & Cowboy and Sharam Jay. Unlike the radio version, the remixes didn't hit the charts. Until 2002 the piece appeared on different samplers in various variants. The longest of these, contained on a sampler from the Dream Dance series , has a running time of 8:11 minutes, the shortest is on the compilation The Annual 2000 with a length of 2:26 minutes .

Music video

The music video for the song was played on the heavy rotation of the music television station VIVA Germany . The main visual element of the music video is an empty pool bathed in leaf-green light. In the video you can see a dance floor shining in that same green light. Meanwhile, Sonique, who wears a gold dress, is DJing. The video also contains narrative elements of a burgeoning romance.

reception

Chuck Taylor of Billboard Magazine said the lyrics convey sufficient pleasure and optimism to enable subjective dreams to be pursued. According to Taylor, the chorus is less convincing than that of the previous single, but he ascribes more emotional depth to the piece. On the following single release, a cover of the Screamin 'Jay Hawkins classic I Put a Spell on You , he stated in February 2001 that although Sky was a great song, it was not sufficiently commercial. In July of the previous year, he attributed Sonique to great potential due to the single Sky to grow to lasting success.

success

Sonique reached the top 10 in many countries with the song . However, Sky only became a number one hit in Poland , which the previous single, however, achieved in several significant charts. The piece recorded its second-highest chart success in Great Britain, where it rose to second place in the charts. In Italy, the song was used as background music for some Omnitel commercials , which made the piece even more popular there. There the song reached third place on the charts.
