Sławomir Zawada [ ˈswavɔmʲir zaˈvada ] (born March 18, 1965 in Więcbork , Poland ) is a former Polish weightlifter .

Career

Zawada's international career began in 1986 when he participated in the World Championships in Sofia. In the middle-heavy weight category up to 90 kg, he took fifth place with a duel of 380.0 kg (170.0 / 210.0 kg). The winner was Anatoli Chrapaty with 412.5 kg. Zawada's performance in pushing brought him bronze in this sub-discipline due to his lower body weight. At the 1987 World Cup in Ostrau, Zawada was able to increase his performance to 395.0 kg (180.0 / 215.0 kg) and won bronze in the duel and in the snatch. First place was again Khrapaty with 417.5 kg, ahead of Iwan Chakarow with 412.5 kg.

In 1988 Zawada went to the Olympic Games in Seoul. After Viktor Solodov had ended his career, and Chakarov was no longer allowed to compete due to the doping scandal of the Bulgarian team, Zawada had a chance of a podium placement. With 400.0 kg (180.0 / 220.0 kg) in a duel, he took third place behind Khrapaty with 412.5 kg and Nail Mukhamedyarov with 400.0 kg. In the battle for second place, only Mukhamedyarovs decided to reduce body weight by 100 grams, as both had lifted the same load.

In 1989 Zawada achieved fourth place at the World Championships in Athens with 390.0 kg (175.0 / 215.0 kg) . Khrapaty came first with 415.0 kg, ahead of Sergej Syrzow with 407.5 kg and Chakarov with 400.0 kg. At the European Championships in 1990 in Aalborg , he was able to increase again to 400.0 kg (185.0 / 215.0 kg) and became vice European champion behind Khrapaty, who achieved 402.5 kg. A year later he was able to repeat this in Władysławowo due to the comparatively weak field of participants with 387.5 kg (177.5 / 210.0 kg). At the 1991 World Cup, however, Zawadas 385.0 kg (175.0 / 210.0 kg) were only enough for fourth place. The first-placed Syrzow achieved 410.0 kg.

The European Championships in 1992 in Szekszárd and 1993 in Sofia were Zawada's last international competitions. In 1992 he was able to win the Vice European Championship in a duel with 397.5 kg (180.0 / 212.5 kg), behind Akakios Kachiasvilis with 400.0 kg. After the restructuring of the weight classes , Zawada switched to the 1st heavyweight up to 99 kg for his last competition. Here he set his absolute best at an international competition with 405.0 kg (185.0 / 220.0 kg) and won the Vice European Championship one last time behind Vyacheslav Rubin , who lifted the same load but was over two kilograms lighter.
