Slim Richey

David Michael "Slim" Richey (born February 11, 1938 in Atlanta , Texas ; † May 31, 2015 in Austin , Texas) was an American bluegrass and jazz guitarist who was active in the music scene in Austin (Texas) .

Richey, who was from east Texas near Texarkana , began his swing music career while playing in a high school band. He attended college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, had lessons with Benny Garcia and style was based on the game of Hank Garland and Barney Kessel , which he combined with influences from T-Bone Walker ; he also played the violin in local country bands .

In his main occupation he initially worked as a publisher and producer; he also played in Fort Worth before moving to the Austin area with his wife Francie Meaux Jeaux. He started out playing the violin with the Jazz Pharaohs and then founded his Dream Band . In 1977 he presented the album Jazz Grass . In the 1980s, recordings were made with bluegrass musicians such as Joe Carr , Bill Caswell , Alan Munde and Ricky Skaggs . With his mail order company Warehouse Music, he sold teaching materials for learning bluegrass music as well as aids for transcribing sound carriers. He also ran a small record label, the best known of which was Ridge Runner Records. They released early recordings by musicians like Sam Bush and Marty Stuart .

In the mid-2000s he accompanied the singer Kat Edmonson at the beginning of her career. Slim Richey combined genres of jazz, swing and country in his eclectic guitar style. He has performed at various local festivals such as the Old Settler's Music Festival and the Kerrville Folk Festival . With his band Jitterbug Vipers he recorded two albums, Tell 'Em Joe Sent You (2012) and Phoebe's Dream (2013). He died at the age of 77 from complications from malignant lymphoma .
