Slocum's River Reserve is a 47 acres (19 hectare ) nature reserve near the city of Dartmouth in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is jointly managed by The Trustees of Reservations and the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust .
Protected area
Despite its comparatively small size, the protected area offers a great variety of landscapes with forest areas, open spaces and a river - the Slocums River, which gives it its name. The area used as farmland in colonial times offers good views of Buzzards Bay and the South Coast region . The salty sea air attracts many visitors, and on a clear day the entire bay, the Elizabeth Islands and even the cliffs of Martha's Vineyard on the southeastern horizon can be viewed from Angelica's Overlook . The sanctuary, which is jointly owned by the Trustees and the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, has protected more than 3,000 ft (914.4 m ) of coastline and salt marshes . There are 2 mi (3.2 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors.
Slocums River
The river after which the reserve is named is 4.3 mi (6.9 km) long and flows through Dartmouth before flowing into Buzzards Bay. The river, named after an early settler family, is actually the second, saltwater-bearing part of the Paskamanset River , which consists of fresh water until the transition into the Slocums River and retained its Indian name for this part.
