The Smith Glacier is a 160 km long glacier low-flow gradient in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It flows from Toney Mountain in an east-northeast direction to the Crosson Ice Shelf on the Walgreen Coast , which it reaches between the Bear Peninsula and Mount Murphy . The Kohler Glacier flowing to the Dotson Ice Shelf is a branch of the Smith Glacier.
The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1967 after Philip Meek Smith (* 1932), deputy director of the National Science Foundation's polar program who was involved in numerous research trips to the Antarctic between 1956 and 1971 .
