Smith (band)
Smith was an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1969 . Members were Gayle McCormick (lead vocals), Rich Cliburn (guitar, vocals), Jerry Carter (bass guitar, vocals), Larry Moss (keyboards) and Robert Evans (drums).
history
The group around the singer Gayle McCormick was discovered by the American singer and songwriter Del Shannon in a nightclub in Los Angeles. He helped her get a record deal with ABC Records . The group covered mostly well-known rock and R&B songs such as Let's Spend the Night Together , The Last Time and Who Do You Love .
Her cover version of the Burt Bacharach song Baby It's You reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in 1969 . More than a million copies were sold between July and October 1969, and the recording was awarded a gold record by the RIAA .
The album A Group Called Smith stayed on the Billboard 200 for eleven weeks , with 17th place being the best. The second album Minus-Plus was less successful. The singles What Am I Gonna Do (co-author: Carole King ) and Take a Look Around were medium successes . Baby It's You was in 2007 in the film Death Proof - Todsicher of Quentin Tarantino use. After the group broke up, Gayle McCormick's It's a Cryin 'Shame was a modest hit in the fall of 1971 (number 44 in the US charts).
Easy rider
In the film Easy Rider , the song The Weight was used, with which The Band was initially only moderately successful. In 2004 it was ranked 41st of the 500 best songs of all time by the music magazine Rolling Stone . Since the original could not be used for the Easy Rider LP due to licensing reasons , Smith was commissioned with a cover version that is very similar to that one. The Weight , on which the singer Gayle McCormick can only be heard as the second voice, is therefore the most played and best-known piece of the group.
