The album Easy Rider is the soundtrack to the film of the same name from 1969.

history

Originally the folk rock band Crosby, Stills and Nash was supposed to deliver the music for the film Easy Rider. On a provisional basis, Peter Fonda , co-producer and (with Dennis Hopper ) screenwriter of the film, as well as one of the leading actors, used some of his favorite songs at the time (according to other sources, the US film editor Donn Cambern is responsible for the music selection). They fit so well that the planned subsequent dubbing no longer took place. David Crosby , Stephen Stills and Graham Nash said after watching a rough version of the film that they couldn't have provided a better musical accompaniment. The license fees for the music exceeded the film budget by more than one million US dollars.

The soundtrack was released in August 1969 by the record company ABC Records and passed on to Reprise Records in 1970 . The LP reached number 6 on the Billboard Albums Chart in September 1969 .

With a few exceptions, the songs appear largely in the same order as in the film. Two tracks, Let's Turkey Trot by Little Eva and Flash, Bam, Pow by The Electric Flag , were not taken over, the Byrds' Wasn't Born to Follow, played twice , only occurs once. For licensing reasons, the original of The Band's song The Weight could not appear on the LP, instead there is a very similar cover version by Smith .

Bob Dylan , who had been asked to contribute, contented himself with writing the opening lines of Ballad of Easy Rider . He passed the task on to Byrds front man Roger McGuinn , whose cover version of Dylan's song It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), recorded for the film (the original could not be used for legal reasons), is also on the soundtrack.

In contrast to the original edition, songs and transitions from later pressings as well as on the CD were partially backed with motorcycle noises.
