geography
Smoky Lake is about 90 kilometers northeast of Edmonton , the capital of Alberta . In the south, the place is affected by the North Saskatchewan River . The connecting roads Alberta Highway 28 and Alberta Highway 855 intersect in the center of the city.
history
There are two versions of the origin of the name Smoky Lake (smoking lake): Some chroniclers are of the opinion that the natives of the area, the Cree Indians, visit the place because of the nearby lake, which is mostly covered with mist or fog in the evening and looks as if it were shrouded in smoke , gave his name. According to another version, the place got its name because the Cree regularly met to smoke pipes on the banks of the lake during their hunts.
The area was popular with trappers and fur traders because of its abundance of game . In the early 1800s, a small trading post was set up. There were also many Christian missionaries among the new settlers who tried to convert the natives to Christianity . With the commissioning of a rail link in 1915, trading activities were further intensified and the population grew. Most of the new settlers came from Ukraine . Smoky Lake was given Village status in 1923 and Town status in 1962 . Most of the inhabitants work on farms. In particular, pumpkins are grown. The place therefore calls itself the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta (Pumpkin Center of Alberta). On the first Saturday in October of each year, Smoky Lake hosts a pumpkin festival that awards prizes to the largest and heaviest pumpkins and watermelons . The festival is developing into a tourist attraction and attracts up to 6000 visitors.
