Snauri ( Georgian ზნაური or ყორნისი / Qornissi, Ossetian Знауыр / Snauyr, Russian Знаури / Snauri or Знаур / Snaur) is an urban-type settlement in South Ossetia .

The place was originally called Okona and was named after the Ossetian revolutionary Snaur Aidarow during the Soviet period in 1933 ; the Georgian and Russian forms of the place name were henceforth Snauri, the Ossetian Snauyr. After the conflict over South Ossetia flared up, the Georgian authorities gave the place the Georgian name Qornissi in 1991, which, however, was not recognized by the local Ossetian authorities. These continue to use the previous name, in Russian today the form Snaur without the “Georgian” end-i is common.

According to Georgian law, the settlement belongs to the Kareli municipality of the Inner Kartlien region . Within the Republic of South Ossetia, which is internationally recognized by only a few countries, Snauri is the main town of the Snaur Rajon named after him , which already existed in the Soviet period as part of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region of the Georgian SSR . The local Snauri economy consists of wood processing and food production businesses.
