interpretation

Marianne and the me of the song are in a relationship, although the two do not live in the same place ("Your letters say that you are beside me now ..."). This relationship has replaced a previously unstable life in the ego. Now the relationship is in question and it is not clear what the future holds. The ego indicates that the two of them have made themselves too comfortable in the relationship and have no longer faced life and its challenges, which is expressed in the verse: "It's time to laugh and cry". The challenge is to step out of the relationship and into a life in which great feelings exist.

Origin background

Cohen is likely to have thought of his girlfriend Marianne Jensen when Marianne mentioned in the title , with whom Leonard Cohen was in a relationship at the time the song was written and who lived on the Greek island of Hydra . While the relationship was active, Cohen is said to have sung the song with the refrain "Come on, Marianne". At that time it was meant as an invitation to change.

Cover versions
