reception

The album received mostly very good reviews, which shows a Metascore of 86% as an average of 21 professional reviews.

The Daily Telegraph , for example, gives the album full marks and speaks of "the work of a genius". The Rolling Stone rated the album four and a half out of five, providing in particular the texts out that "according to the power of prayers, hymns and religious mysteries grab" would

Pitchfork Media rates the album 7.4 out of 10 and states that it is not the best album Cohen has ever released, but neither cheap nor unimportant. The songs are neat, but the singing is overwhelming. Stylistically, the album is arranged sparingly and cautiously, rooted in blues and gospel and perhaps closest to folk music , of everything that Cohen has released since the 1970s.

The album was also largely rated positively in German-speaking media, including four out of five points from laut.de and Plattentests.de with eight out of ten points.

"If 'Old ideas' should become Cohen's legacy, it's a worthy one."

  9. “This is not the best album Cohen has put out. It is also not The Bucket List-- certainly not cheap or trivial or trading on his age alone. The songs are decent, the singing is stunning. "
  10. "Old Ideas is a spare, low-key album rooted in blues and gospel - maybe the closest thing he's made to 'folk' music since the early 1970s."
