So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes is the seventh studio album by the American punk rock band NOFX . It was released on November 11, 1997 through Epitaph Records .

The title is a reference to a tradition common in punk rock shows, in which fans throw the shoes that band members have lost during stage diving , for example , back onto the stage. He also alludes to the fourth book of the four-part trilogy in five volumes The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams , So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish .
The album was recorded at Motor Studios in San Francisco in August 1997 by Fat Mike and Fat Wreck Chords producer Ryan Greene. Instead of photos of the real band members, the songbook contains a photo of a member of another band. Fat Mike was played by Serge Verkhovsky, bassist for the band Limp, El Hefe by Otis Bartholomeou, singer and guitarist with fluf, Eric Melvin (or just "Melvin") from "Little Joe", roadie from the band Swingin 'Utters , and Erik Sandin ( listed as "Smelly") replaced by Chuck Platt, bassist at Good Riddance .
Song 9 on the album, Champs Elysées , is a cover version by Joe Dassin . Song 16, Falling in Love is a love song about a friend of Fat Mike and his wife on a plane crashing. The song includes a " hidden track " at 4:15 minutes.
