El Hefe (actually Aaron Abeyta * 8. August 1965 in Sacramento ) since 1991, lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the US - punk band NOFX .

Life

His nickname is derived from the Spanish "el jefe" and refers to his work as a chef ( Chèf de cuisine ). Aaron Abeyta was a boy with the scouts and was awarded the rank of Order of the Arrow . From high school, which Abeyta left without a degree, he joined the Guardian Angels , a nonprofit civic organization that patrolled and maintained order in the Sacramento neighborhoods where rival street gangs like the Crips and Funk Lords fought. Abeyta also received lessons in the Japanese-Korean karate form Renbukai until his parents could no longer financially afford their son's martial arts training. At a family reunion in El Paso , when Aaron Abeyta was 16, he was given a handmade acoustic guitar at a Mexican street market. With a part-time job as a welder in a locksmith's shop, Abeyta earned the money for an unbranded Flying V guitar and a Yamaha G5 amplifier. Using his mother's extensive record collection, which included albums by Gene Vincent and musical styles such as calypso , rock'n'roll , classical and mariachi songs, Abeyta trained his musical feeling at home in the living room in front of the record player. When he owned his first trumpet, he practiced playing it along with his mother's records. In high school Abeyta played in the school's brass band and in the school's jazz band. The first songs he learned on the electric guitar, some by ear, were Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix , Dazed and Confused, and Iron Man by Black Sabbath . Together with friends, he founded the funk rock band Crystal Sphere . In addition, Aaron Abeyta was a big fan of comedy such as Redd Foxx , Cheech and Chong , Richard Pryor and The Three Stooges and liked to imitate their skits as an impersonator for the amusement of those around him. Although Abeyta did not have a high school diploma, he had the opportunity to attend numerous music courses at Sacramento City College, such as piano, music history, music understanding and music literature, combined with singing courses from opera to barbershop quartet, which Aaron Abeyta, who is a singer increased from baritone to tenor, eagerly absorbed. In college he studied the work of composers such as Antonio Vivaldi , Tchaikovsky and Johann Sebastian Bach in depth .

In order to be able to bribe local radio disc jockeys with cash so that they would play a single by his band Crystal Sphere, Aaron Abeyta obtained a trunk full of bundled $ 20 bills worth several thousand dollars from a counterfeiter. He and his cousin used the counterfeit money for purchases and in this way washed the money away. For example, they bought a $ 1 scratch card at a kiosk and paid with a fake $ 20 bill, which gave them $ 19 real banknotes as change. They planned a visit to Disneyland and wanted to circulate the other counterfeit money there in a similar way. However, when Abeyta's cousin was out and about to buy some marijuana in People's Park in Berkeley , the two boys were caught by two police cars. Aaron Abeyta and his cousin spent a few nights in jail for drug purchases and possession of counterfeit money. To get their son out of jail on bail, Aaron Abeyta's parents put their house on deposit as security. A lawsuit ensued, but the judge was unable to convict the two young offenders for a chain of evidence error because the police had not informed them of their rights during their arrest and the police officers therefore illegally searched Abeyta's car. After that, Aaron Abeyta had to repay his parents' legal and legal fees. This terrible experience was a lesson to him, which is why Abeyta vowed never to break the law again.

Singer and guitarist Mark Curry from his former funk rock band Crystal Sphere managed to sign a contract as a solo musician with the record company Virgin Records . Then he tried to contract his band colleagues from Crystal Sphere as a backing band also with Virgin, but the management refused. Even so, Mark Curry never forgot his friends, using his first prepayment check to provide them with groceries and gasoline for the car. Aaron Abeyta bought a brand new Fender Stratocaster model in 1962. The song Perfect Government , which is on the NOFX album Punk in Drublic from 1994, was written by Mark Curry and is a popular classic with NOFX audiences.

When Abeyta joined the punk rock group NOFX, the band underwent a significant musical change. This is mainly due to his use of many different instruments besides the guitar , such as the trumpet , as elements of ska also flowed into the band's sound. He also taught guitarist Eric Melvin and bassist Fat Mike a deeper understanding of guitars, including how to properly tune strings, and, drawing on his college-level musical knowledge, how Fat Mike could become a better singer. Originally Abeyta did not consider himself punk at all and could not do much with this style of music in the beginning, instead he had always strived for technical perfection on guitar and trumpet. That's why Aaron Abeyta wasn't sure at all whether he would be a human fit for the punk rock band NOFX. In Chapter 60 of the NOFX autobiography The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories , Aaron "El Hefe" Abeyta writes about joining NOFX: “ To play punk, I had to unlearn everything I knew about guitar technique. “When Abeyta joined NOFX, the album Nevermind by the grunge band Nirvana was released shortly afterwards , which surprisingly sold millions of copies and went mainstream. Therefore Abeyta wanted to encourage his new band NOFX to orient themselves to the professionalism of Nirvana as ambitious musicians in order to make it big with a similar approach, which his bandmates did not want to believe in yet. From the album White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean , Abeyta earned almost $ 100,000 a year as a NOFX member. He received an advance of $ 240,000 for the 1994 album Punk in Drublic . In chapter 80 of the book “ The Hepatitis Bathtub ... ” Aaron Abeyta writes: “ I had the standard of living of a doctor or a lawyer without having to wear a suit. "

Like his bandmate Fat Mike, Hefe also has his own music label, Cyber Track Records, which specializes in punk rock. He also produces hip-hop beats and plays guitar in Mark Curry & the Hell's House Band .

"El Hefe" lives in Eureka , California , where he also owned a nightclub .
