The Software Freedom Conservancy ( SFC for short ) is an organization that offers free and open source software projects a non-profit home and the necessary infrastructure.

history

Conservancy was established in 2006. In 2007, Conservancy launched coordinated GPL compliance and enforcement actions, primarily for the BusyBox project. BusyBox maintainer Rob Landley later regretted his decision to support these lawsuits and even criticized the use of lawsuits by the SFC.

In October 2010, Conservancy hired its first executive director ( Bradley M. Kuhn ) and a year later its first general counsel (Tony Sebro).

In May 2012, SFC took up additional compliance and enforcement actions for member projects and even for some individual Linux kernel developers.

In March 2014, Conservancy hired Karen Sandler as Managing Director and Bradley M. Kuhn also took on the role of Distinguished Technologist.

As of April 2014, Conservancy has 30 member projects, including Boost (C ++ library) , BusyBox , Git , Inkscape , Samba and Wine .

In February 2015, the Outreachy Program (formally: "Free and Open Source Software Program for Women") announced that they were moving away from The GNOME Project (the community behind GNOME ) to become part of SFC.

Legal proceedings

In July 2010, Conservancy announced that it had won against Westinghouse Digital in court ; Westinghouse Digital thus received a cease and desist judgment as part of a default judgment .

In March 2015, Conservancy announced that it was funding a lawsuit by Christoph Hellwig - who is fighting against VMware for violating his copyright in its ESXi product. This case will be carried out in the district court in Hamburg . VMware announced that it believes this case is being conducted without firm reasoning and that it is disappointed with Conservancy's move to initiate a lawsuit.

They HAVE resulted in more than one company exiting Linux development entirely and switching to non-Linux operating systems for their embedded products, and they're a big part of the reason behind Android's "No GPL in userspace" policy.
