Sōichi Noguchi ( Japanese 野 口 聡 一 , Noguchi Sōichi ; born April 15, 1965 in Yokohama , Japan ) is a Japanese astronaut .

In 1984 Noguchi graduated from Chigasaki high school and then began studying engineering at the University of Tokyo , which he successfully completed in 1989 with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1991 .

Noguchi is married and has three children.

Astronaut activity

In June 1996, Noguchi was selected as an astronaut by NASDA, the predecessor of the Japanese space agency JAXA . In August, he went to the Johnson Space Center (JSC) to train as a mission specialist for two years. In 1998 he then took part in basic training for Russian manned space systems at the Yuri Gagarin cosmonaut training center. In addition, he was introduced to the Japanese ISS experimental module Kibo at JSC .

First use: STS-114

From April 2001, Noguchi was preparing for his first space flight, which was postponed several times due to the Columbia accident in February 2003. On July 26, 2005, he took off with STS-114 on the first space shuttle flight after the Columbia crash. Noguchi performed three space exits (EVAs) with a total duration of over 20 hours. He has the greatest EVA experience of the space travelers from host countries (neither Russia / USSR nor USA).

Second mission: ISS regular crew 2009/2010

Noguchi carried out a long-term stay on the International Space Station from December 2009 to May 2010 as part of ISS expeditions 22 and 23 . The launch with the Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft took place on December 20, 2009 and returned on June 2, 2010.

Third assignment: ISS regular crew 2020/2021

Noguchi is nominated for another ISS long-term flight. Initially, he was scheduled as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 62 and 63 . The launch was scheduled for April 2020, but Noguchi had to vacate the space due to delays in the test flights of new American spaceships ( CCDev ) for a US astronaut. Instead, he was assigned to the SpaceX Crew-1 mission , which is due to start that same year.

Publicity

Noguchi posted daily photos of the ISS and Earth on his Twitter channel.
