Solanum glaucophyllum is a plant type from the genus Solanum ( Solanum ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Solanum glaucophyllum is a shrub or small tree that grows to about 0.5 to 4 m high and forms a rhizome . The trunk is hairless or rarely moderately to densely hairy, usually light colored and smooth. The sympodial units usually have four leaves . The leaf blades are 6 to 18 cm long and 0.6 to 3.5 (rarely up to 5) cm wide. The ratio of length to width is between 4.5: 1 and 10: 1, rarely 15: 1. They are simply shaped, narrowly elliptical, tapered towards the front, tapered at the base or descending the petiole . They are succulent or fleshy, the leaf axis and the edge are often thickened and whitish. Both sides are hairless or rarely moderately to densely hairy. The leaf stalks are up to 1.5 cm long or shorter, hairless and often slightly winged.

The inflorescences are branched, sometimes even heavily branched and usually contain 20 to 50 flowers or more. The peduncle is 1 to 3.5 cm long, the inflorescence axis 2 to 7 cm. The flower stalks, which are about 1 to 15 mm apart, are 12 to 15 mm long at flowering time and 15 to 20 mm on the fruits. They are flexible at the base. The calyx is hairless except for a sparse hair on the edge, it measures 2 to 3 mm in diameter and is covered with triangular and pointed calyx tips 0.5 to 1.5 mm long and 1.5 to 2.5 mm wide. The crown is membranous, whitish to pink or purple and often has a white star in the middle. It is circular-star-shaped and folded in and measures 10 to 30 mm in diameter. The corolla tube is 5 to 8 mm long, the corolla lobes measure 4 to 10 mm and are 5 to 10 mm wide at the base. Their shape is broadly triangular, tapering towards the front. The outside of the crown is moderately to densely hairy, especially the outer parts of the corolla lobes and the areas where the petals adhere. The inside is hairless except for a few hairs at the tip of the corolla lobes. The anthers are usually bent inwards, yellow to yellow-orange in color and egg-shaped. The outside is smooth to roughened but not noticeably papilous . The pores point outwards. The ovary and the stylus are hairless. The stylus is cylindrical, 5 to 7 mm long, 0.25 to 0.5 mm in diameter and has a cut-off shaped scar .

The fruits are 0.75 to 2 cm long and just as wide. They are spherical and often pointed at the tip when young, but blunt when ripe. The surface is hairless, dark purple or blue-black and frosted when ripe. Stone cells are not available. The seeds are about 4 to 6 cm long and 3.5 to 4 cm wide. They are angled, smooth or have fine serrated ribs.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in Bolivia , southern Brazil , Paraguay , northern Argentina and Uruguay . It grows in low, swampy soils on the edge of pools in seasonally flooded areas. The locations are at altitudes between 0 and 600 m.
