The Soldiers 'and Sailors' Monument in Indianapolis , Indiana, USA, is an 87-meter-high neoclassical war memorial that was erected from 1888 to 1901 in honor of the fallen Hoosier . It is intended to commemorate the sons of Indiana , who fell from the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the end of the American Civil War in 1865.
The monument made of Oolithic limestone and bronze stands on Monument Circle in the center of the city that was later built around the monument. It was based on a design by the German architect Bruno Schmitz, who specializes in monumental buildings . Some of the figures come from the Austrian sculptor Rudolf Schwarz (1866–1912), the bronze frieze from Nikolaus Geiger , who was born in Bavaria and later professor at the Berlin Academy of the Arts .
The monument was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
The Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum is located on the lower level .
