Solid State Records was a jazz label founded in 1966 by producers Sonny Lester and Phil Ramone together with arranger Manny Albam as a sub-label of United Artists . The first release was Manny Albam's 1966 album Brass on Fire . On the label between appeared between the mid and late 1960s recordings a. a. Joe Williams , Chick Corea ( Now He Sings, Now He Sobs 1968 and Is , 1969), Jimmy McGriff , Dizzy Gillespie , the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra ,Mike Mainieri , Chico Hamilton , Johnny Lytle , Sonny Stitt , Randy Brecker , Ray Nance and Candido , but also Easy Listening , for example by Nelson Riddle . Also appeared on Solid State re-releases of older United Artists productions by King Pleasure , Charles Mingus ( Pre-Bird , 1962), Duke Ellington ( Money Jungle , 1962), Bill Evans ( Undercurrent , with Jim Hall , 1962), Herbie Mann , John Coltrane , Billy Strayhorn , Count Basie , Billie Holiday, and Vi Redd . The last publication was Duke Ellington's 70th Birthday Concert (1969). After United Artists bought the Blue Note label, the Solid State Records catalog was partially republished there.
