Solo in Stuttgart is a solo album by Kenny Werner . A concert by the jazz pianist was recorded on June 10, 1992 in the studio hall of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) in Stuttgart; the recordings were released on the SWR Jazzhaus label in 2019.

background

When Kenny Werner gave his concert in Stuttgart in 1992, he had just started to experiment with the possibilities of piano solo programs; a little later he presented the solo albums Meditations ( SteepleChase Records ) and Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 34 ( Concord ). He had become one of the numerous pianists in the jazz metropolis of New York, appreciated and booked by many music colleagues, but without having experienced a special moment of discovery by a broader audience.

reception

Georg Waßmuth ( Südwestrundfunk ) wrote: “One of the standard jazz textbooks on the subject of ' improvisation ' comes from the pianist Kenny Werner, born in Brooklyn in 1951. Effortless Mastery is his title. During his long career, Kenny Werner has repeatedly underpinned his theses on the 'free flight of thoughts' with extraordinary concert appearances. In addition, the author praises the sound quality of the recording: “The sound engineers captured Kenny Werner's inspired playing [...] in a clearly audible manner and with an enormous presence. Therefore, the CD 'Live in Stuttgart' can record with every new production. The listener gets the impression that he is sitting in the front row while Kenny Werner takes the time and space for his epic improvisations. "

According to the author of JazzBluesNews , Werner had developed “into a high-quality craftsman”, “who did not draw his strength from the struggle for innovation, but from the elegance and finesse with which the pianistic possibilities of the keyboard tradition flowed into his music. Werner's advanced position was also evident in the repertoire that he brought with him to the studio of Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) in Stuttgart on June 10, 1992, the starting point for allowing his own creativity to play on familiar melodies and forms.
