Somatochlora brevicincta is a type of dragonfly from the family of the falcon dragonflies (Corduliidae), which belong to the large dragonflies (Anisoptera).

features

The imago of somatochlora brevicincta measures 47-50 mm, of which 28 to 31 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively small within the genus. The abdomen is very dark in color. While the first segment is dark brown and the second segment, apart from the black auricles, is brown, the rest of the abdomen is black. In addition, the abdomen is covered with a dark pattern. This includes the brownish base of the third segment and a dot at the front on the sides of the four segments with eight. The latter are initially significantly larger in the females than in the males. The intersegmental skins of the first two segments as well as the eighth and ninth segments are also slightly lighter than the segments themselves and thus contribute to the pattern. In addition, the tenth segment at the transition to the cerci is yellowish in females . The cerci themselves are black. Small hairs start in the middle of the third segment and occupy the rest of the abdomen. From the third segment the abdomen expands and from the sixth to the eighth it narrows again and then swells again on the ninth and tenth.

The chest ( thorax ) is, as usual in the genus, metallic green. It is also covered with brownish hair. The drawing consists of an elongated light yellow point on the mesepimeron . The legs are black except for the base and parts of the femur . The hind wings measure 29 to 31 millimeters. The wings are transparent, only the region around the anal triangle is amber in the males. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is yellow-brown and the wing veins are black.

On the face, the labium and the anteclypeus are light yellow. In contrast, the labrum , vertex , occiput , back of the head and postclypeus are black. The latter also has a yellow marking in the middle.

Spread and time of flight

The species is particularly common in Canada . In the United States , it is only known in Maine . It flies between June and September.
