Somatochlora semicircularis is a species of dragonfly from the family of the falcon dragonflies (Corduliidae), which belong to the large dragonflies (Anisoptera).

The imago of Somatochlora semicircularis measures 47-52 mm, of which 34 to 40 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is on average within the genus. The metallic green abdomen has a yellow pattern, which is composed as follows. On the second segment there are yellow dots and a broken apical ring. On the third segment on the sides there are the triangular spots typical of the genus. On segments four to eight, the color of the pattern changes into yellow-brown and in the males consists of lateral spots that merge into a strip in the females. The pattern fades with age. In both sexes, the ventral side of these segments is also yellow-brown and the back is black and hairy.

The part of the chest thorax to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is thickly covered with yellow-brown hair. Underneath it is bright green in the area of ​​the bulges. There are also two yellow stripes on the sides of the thorax. The legs are black. The hind wings measure 27 to 34 millimeters. The wings are transparent and lightly whitewashed smoke-brown.

In the black face only the anteclypeus is light; the end ( frons ) decorated with two large yellow stains on the sides and the top side of the vertex ( vertex ) green metallic. Overall the head is hairy.

The species is found in the northeastern United States and Canada . It flies between June and October.
