The Somero Pond ( English , from Spanish somero , 'shallow' ) is a small still body of water ( pond or pond ) on the Byers Peninsula of Livingston Island , the second largest of the South Shetland Islands . The round water with a diameter of about 60 meters is located 1175 m southwest of Usnea Plug at about 80 m above sea level and is a maximum of one meter deep in the Antarctic midsummer. Its bottom is covered in the middle by cyanobacteria - ("blue-green algae") - mats and at the edge by cyanobacteria and aquatic mosses .

A stream reaches the water in the southeast and immediately leaves it again in the direction of Limnopolar Lake to the east .

After the water was examined by Spanish scientists in a case study on behalf of the small water bodies of the peninsula, an automatic weather station continuously collects data from the water body. The descriptive name was already used in many scientific publications before 2013 from Spain to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research was reported (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, SCAR).
