The International Paralympic Committee distinguishes between three classes - B1, B2 and B3. In each game two teams with four field players, one goalkeeper and five substitutes each play. Field players must be blind or have a visual impairment. Everyone wears a blindfold to ensure equal opportunities. The goalkeeper is allowed to see and does not wear a blindfold. Behind the opposing goal each team has a teammate who shouts to help them aim. The ball makes noises when it moves in order to better determine its position. Two halves of 25 minutes each are played. In the event of a tie, a penalty shoot-out follows.
qualification
There are eight men's teams, which are divided into two groups. Women's teams did not participate.
Each nation was allowed to send a team consisting of eight field players and two goalkeepers - the goalkeepers do not count towards the permitted number of 64 athletes. However, like other able-bodied helpers, they were able to win medals for the first time in 2012.
