Each competition consists of a preliminary round and placement games. When dividing the groups, the hosts were set. The other teams were distributed to the groups according to their placements in the current world rankings of the world association WOVD.
Ten teams compete in the men's tournament. In the preliminary round there are two groups with five teams each, which play everyone against everyone . The best four teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals. Then the simple knockout system continues until the endgame. There are eight teams playing for women, which are divided into two groups in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reach the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals play for the gold medal.
The squads of the individual teams each consist of eleven players. The teams are made up of handicapped ("disabled") and less restricted ("minimally disabled") athletes. A maximum of one participant with minor disabilities may sit on the playing field during the game.
Host Great Britain was set to host. At the 2010 World Championships, the three best teams each qualified for London. Defending champions and world champions Iran as well as Bosnia and Egypt secured these places in the men, while China won the women's World Cup final against the USA. Another five male and four female teams reached the Paralympics via continental qualifying tournaments. The last participant for the men's tournament was determined at the Intercontinental Cup in Cairo . This is how Germany qualified.
