geography

location

Like the Zwergberg (589.3 m), the summer side (540.8 m), the Rittersberg (531.8 m), the Sternberg (511.3 m) and the Nollenkopf (490.3 m), the Sommerberg belongs to the Foothills of the Hohen Loog massif ( 618.7  m ). It is located in an exposed location directly on the edge of the Haardt, so that it can be perceived as a striking mountain despite the relatively low altitude from locations on the Rhine plain. In the north, the mountain is connected to the summer side by a flat saddle. The summit is completely forested and not accessible via hiking trails. The mountain belongs to the district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse .

Natural allocation

The Sommerberg belongs to the "Palatinate Forest" natural area, which is classified as a 3rd order Greater Region in the systematics of the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany published by Emil Meynen and Josef Schmithüsen and its subsequent publications . If you look at the internal structure of the natural area , it belongs to the Middle Palatinate Forest and here to the Haardt mountain range, which separates the Palatinate Forest from the Upper Rhine Plain .

In summary, the natural spatial allocation of the Wetterkreuzberg follows the following system:

  1. Greater region 1st order: Layer level land on both sides of the Upper Rhine Rift
  2. Greater region 2nd order: Palatinate-Saarland layer level land
  3. Greater region 3rd order: Palatinate Forest
  4. 4th order region (main unit): Middle Palatinate Forest
  5. 5th order region: Haardt

Weather cross

On the southeast slope of the mountain there is a weather cross at a height of about 380 m . According to the inscription in the base of the cross, it was erected in 1864 by the parish of Diedesfeld . The location offers a comprehensive view of the Rhine plain . The Zeter Berghaus , a popular excursion destination, is around 80 m lower with a shaded terrace garden that also offers a magnificent view.

hike

Some hiking trails lead over the mountain from the Schlossberg with the Hambacher Schloss or from the Klausental to the main summit of the Hohen Loog.
