Romaine lettuce , also Roman or romaine lettuce , Lattuga , Romaine lettuce , binding lettuce ( Lactuca sativa cos group , Lactuca sativa var. Longifolia ) is a variety of the plant species garden lettuce ( Lactuca sativa ).
description
Its bright green leaves are elongated, strongly wavy and have pronounced central leaf veins. Almost upright and up to 40 centimeters long, they form a loose head with a weight of up to about 300 grams, which had to be tied together with older varieties so that the lettuce hearts remain tender and light.
history
Romaine lettuce is said to have been known in Egypt 4,000 years ago and was originally only grown in the Mediterranean countries . Today it is spread across Europe and America .
use
The structure and taste of romaine lettuce are stronger than lettuce or lettuce . The tender inner leaves in particular are used fresh for salads, but can also be steamed as vegetables. With the old Kasseler Strünkchen variety , the stem is used instead. Romaine lettuce is the main ingredient in Caesar Salad , a classic dish in American cuisine .
