Song Duzong
Song Duzong ( Chinese 度 宗 , Pinyin Dùzōng ; * 1240 ; † August 12, 1274 ) was the 15th emperor of the Song Dynasty and thus the 6th emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty. He ruled over the Empire of China from 1264 to 1274. He was a nephew of his predecessor, Emperor Lizong , who died childless.
His reign was marked by internal turmoil and the clashes with the Mongols . Duzong largely left the business of government to his chancellor Jia Sidao . This tried to secure the priority of the civilian leadership over the armed forces and ordered repeated audits of the military leaders, which put their loyalty to the imperial house to a severe test. When the war against the Mongols flared up again in 1268, many Song commanders surrendered to the Mongols without a fight. Emperor Song Duzong died shortly after a decisive defeat by the Mongols at Xiangyang . He was succeeded by his four-year-old son Gong .
