Song Yŏng (born March 15, 1940 in Yŏnggwang , Chŏllanam-do ; † October 14, 2016 ) was a South Korean writer .

Life

Song Yŏng was born in 1940 in Yŏnggwang, South Chŏlla Province . His stage name was Mokdang (목당 | 木 堂). He graduated from the Korean Foreign Language University in German literature in 1963 and became a teacher a short time later. He made his debut in 1967 with the work Hahnenkampf (투계).

His literature often develops in unusual situations and is portrayed from the perspective of unconventional characters. The teacher and the crown prince (선생 과 황태자) plays in a prison and in train on the center line (중앙선 기차) he describes various events in a crowded train. These locations offer Song an unexpectedly accurate microcosm of society. The great confusion and baseless violence that the narrator describes are often full of irony and quite brief, they raise questions about our lives in the real world. These questions often lead to criticism of various forms of authority that ridicule common sense and limit individual freedom. Typically, his characters remain outside the network of relationships that secure the social identity of the individual. The protagonist of Hahnenkampf is a man who lives isolated in his own world and has an extremely twisted view of the reality around him. In On the stairs (계단 에서) existential fear also characterizes the main character's attitude towards the world.
