The Lennetal nature reserve below Schmallenberg with a size of 12.2 hectares is located between Fleckenberg and Schmallenberg . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . The NSG borders the Schmallenberg sewage treatment plant in the northeast and commercial operations in the south.

Area description

The NSG is a section of the Lenne with its floodplain. The Lenne has the appearance of a typical low mountain range in the past. Despite partial bank reinforcements, the Lenne shows striking meanders. The low mountain range has a locally differentiated, dynamic transverse and longitudinal profile with gravel banks, pools, bank breaks and sliding floors. The river is accompanied by a wooded fringe and high perennial banks. The meadow is occupied by grassland. The floodplain is partly used intensively as grassland. Adjacent to the sewage treatment plant is a small wasteland area. This fallow provides habitat for bird species of the tall herbaceous meadows and reed beds.

Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the Lennetal with a species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

According to the landscape plan, it was identified in particular for the "preservation of an open, structurally rich Lennetal section as an important stepping stone and refuge biotope, not least because of its distinctive special geomorphological peculiarity of the distinctive meander formation, - preservation and promotion of the grasslands through extensive agricultural use, - Development of near-natural extensive grassland communities. The NSG also serves to sustainably secure habitats that are particularly worthy of protection in accordance with Section 62 LG and of Red List animal and plant species.
